Hey, everyone! I've been lurking for a while and can't get enough of all the custom content these games have spawned. I recently got into painting my minis and also picked up some plastic models from both Reaper and the new D&D unpainted line. I figured I would take a stab at making some cards to accompany them. Feedback would be very much appreciated as I am new to this and still don't have a feel for good balance and such.
I referenced the 4th Ed. monster books for ideas. I wanted to make them a bit more unique than just "move and attack" since the game already has plenty of those.
Although the Gnoll archers in the games don't have it, the MM mentions Gnolls getting a bonus to damage when they gang up on you. I tried to reflect that.
I couldn't think of much to do with the Griffon beyond also offering an ally version. I haven't seen anyone experiment with allowing allies to be rideable mounts, I'm not even sure how you'd communicate that with the minis. Maybe they would just allow you to move up to 2 tiles when adjacent? Any ideas?
Vampires seem more the realm of villains and high-level monsters, so I was trying to come up with lower level variants. The MM mentioned that vampires that don't rest at least 6 hours in their coffin are significantly weakened, so I had the idea to have what could be a boss vampire at half power. I wanted to make these guys dangerous, but with a fatal flaw: that being the sunlight. Though that would probably just mean that everyone races for the entrance tile when one shows up.
I was thinking up how to do a vampire ally, something like a "Usurper Vampire" who works with the heroes long enough to overthrow another great vampire. Might be too powerful though.
I had another idea, but so far no mini to try it with. Some kind of maddman that comes as both a monster and ally, and switches between the two based on some circumstance (a roll every turn or such).
Anyway, for those wondering, the Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures line is pretty nice. They're very detailed and plastic, so they complement the minis from the games nicely. I'm not planning on doing cards for all of them, just the ones I pick up. I'll also be doing some cards for some Reaper Bones minis I picked up.
